“Create a strong, sustainable, self-reliant local economy where prosperity is shared by all.”

Why?

Cwmaman like many communities in the valleys has suffered a slow deterioration in its retail and business fortunes with the closure of the local mines and the continuing decline in the manufacturing sector. Due to its isolation the retail sector has suffered further decline with the onset and increased prosperity in the retail sector in Aberdare. This decline has resulted in many closed and derelict shop premises within the village.

The continued decline over the last five years seems to have bottomed out with a key turning point being the £3.4m redevelopment of the community enterprise Cwmaman Public Hall & Institute. This has proved to be a catalyst for change by providing much needed jobs in the community and attracting up to 5000 visits a week to the village through its arts & leisure, and conference facilities. It is also home to the Cwmaman Silver Band and over 40 clubs and societies. In 2003/4 we have seen further investment in shops and the Bonceyff Pub as well as the maintenance of existing companies in the area.

We will:

  • Sustain and develop existing businesses, working towards providing business advice and support to improve productivity and competitiveness.
  • Stimulate entrepreneurship within the local community through capacity building & training.
  • Create an environment which encourages existing community owned and new social enterprise to capitalise on opportunities for growth.
  • Remove barriers to employment by providing through counselling.
  • Support access to training & support.

Targets:

  • Establish an active programme of support and advice for business through workshop & individual counselling and advice sessions.
  • Work towards developing and raising awareness of entrepreneurship and self-employment in the community.
  • Ensure that the community has access to job opportunities through the ‘Action Team for Jobs’ and ‘Career Wales’.
  • Safeguard existing jobs & create new jobs, which meet community need and encourage further investment in the village.
  • Create new community owned businesses.
  • Tackle problems of debt by expanding Credit Union services.
